The Doula Tip That Keeps You Home Longer (And Why That's A Good Thing!)

Okay, doula tip time, and this one might save you an unnecessary trip and a whole lot of unnecessary stress.

The second those contractions start, every fiber of your being is going to scream GO NOW. I get it. Your body's doing something enormous and your brain wants a hospital bracelet and a professional standing there telling you everything's fine. Totally human. Totally normal.

But here's what I tell every single client, every single time. Stay home as long as you possibly can.

Early labor can drag on for hours, sometimes a full day, sometimes longer, and showing up too soon usually just means more waiting around in a gown that doesn't close right, hooked up to monitors, watching a clock that isn't actually yours. Once you're checked in, things start moving on the hospital's timeline, not your body's.

So here's your actual cheat code. It's called 5-1-1. Contractions 5 minutes apart, lasting a full minute each, for at least an hour straight. Still ACOG's standard guidance in 2026, still what most providers use. That's your green light. Not the first contraction. Not the first hour of contractions.

Quick but important pause here….. This tip is for a normal, low risk pregnancy with no complications. Always follow your own provider's specific instructions first, they know you and your pregnancy best. And this is just one piece of the picture, not the whole thing. If this isn't your first baby, things can move much faster, so many providers say head in as soon as that pattern starts, don't wait the full hour. If you live 30 or more minutes from the hospital, go in a little earlier too. And some things skip the timer completely. Your water breaking, heavy bleeding, decreased baby movement, or constant pain with no relief between contractions mean go now, no counting required, no waiting to see.

Until then, live your life. Shower. Eat the sandwich. Sway around your kitchen. Rest between contractions like it's your job, because it kind of is.

This is the exact moment a doula earns every penny. Not just showing up once you're at the hospital, but being the calm voice on the phone helping you figure out if this is real labor, and telling you the truth when it actually is time to go.

Your body already knows the pace. Let it lead..
